Lonestar
NASHVILLE,
Tenn. -- Country
group Lonestar is known for selling over 10 million albums and having
ten number one singles on the country charts and nine Top 40 songs
on the pop charts. The band will release their 10th album, Party
Heard Around the World, on April 27. The group became popular
with the hits "No News," "Amazed," "Smile,"
"What About Now" and "Tell Her." The group has
a new record deal with Saguaro Road Records.
Cody
Collins joined Lonestar in 2007, so this will be the first album
with him singing the vocals after Richie McDonald left to pursue
a solo career.
"Oh
man, I was pretty excited," Collins said about the phone call
that he would be joining the group. "I honestly didn't believe
it at first. I thought it was a prank call. A couple of my buddies
were pulling a prank on me. It turned out to be true. I was pretty
excited."
He is the
youngest member of Lonestar because the group was formed in 1992.
"I
was pretty young, I'm not going to say the number," the lead
singer admitted. "I've been a fan of the group for a long time.
It doesn't bother me being the youngest member. We pretty much do
all the same stuff. I'm done with college. We get along pretty well.
We have a great time on the road. Everything's formed together real
nice. It's been really fun. You don't notice a change when you're
hanging out with us all together."
Lonestar
has had many number one hits including "Mr. Mom," "My
Front Porch Looking In" and "I'm Already There" among
many others. Which is his favorite to perform?
"'Everything's
Changed' is probably one of my favorites," Collins said. "'What
About Now,' 'Walking in Memphis' is always a fun one. 'Amazed' was
a lot of fun. I have been singing that for quite a while. It's nice
to change up the show and cover all of the hits because there is
a lot of them."
Can you
give me some highlights of the new album, Party Heard Around
the World?
"It's
a lot of fun, it's going to be a rockin' album," he said. "We've
got quite a few uptempto songs. Party Heard Around the World
pretty much says it all. That's what we're going to do this
year. We've got some really good slow songs in there. We're going
to start off with 'You're the Reason Why' the first next single
off of the album. It's going to have something for everybody."
The release
date of the album was originally scheduled for March 30, but it
was pushed back a few weeks to April 27.
"We
had a few opportunities on the table as far as recording some of
the older hits, like 'Amazed,' 'What About Now,' 'Tell Her,'"
the lead singer responded. "We decided that we were just re-record
some of those acoustically and put a package deal together. In select
locations, we're going to sell the acoustic CD with the album."
How would
you say the new record different from the group's previous albums?
"Well,
it's got me on it," Collins laughed. "That's exponentially
fun for me, being the first record other than the Christmas album
that I will be with these guys. It's really fun. The band co-wrote
the album together. We sat down and worked all these songs out.
We put our hearts and soul into it. It feels more like a band for
the rest of the guys in it. It's been the most fun experience I've
ever had."
What's the
story behind the single "Let Me Love You"?
"Well,
I didn't write the song, but it's basically a love song," he
said. "It's a guy asking a girl to open up your heart to me.
Basically, let me in. A lot of girls don't want to do that these
days. They think we're all douche bags. It's nice for a girl to
open up to somebody and let somebody in."
Can you
tell me a little about your new single "You're The Reason Why"?
"We
co-wrote that on the bus ride between a weekend show run,"
the lead singer said. "A funny story about the song: we started
writing the song in the back of the bus. Dean, our keyboard player,
he's also the relief driver. It was time for him to take over and
drive a little bit. We moved up to the front of the bus. Michael
had a guitar in the passenger seat and I sat in the middle while
Dean drove. Keech, we all just kind of finished the song in the
front of the bus. It's a great song. It's another love song, but
it's a very powerful ballad, love song."
Lonestar
doesn't have any upcoming dates in the Detroit area as of right
now, but that may change in the summer.
"I
hope so very much," Collins responded. "When we went to
Detroit last year for the Hoedown, we had a lot of fun. I'm hoping
to go back there very soon."
What was
it like performing at Detroit's Downtown Hoedown?
"It
was my first time there last year," he said. "It was a
lot of fun. The weather was a little rough. It was rainy and a little
chilly, it wasn't that bad. The crowd was great. They were real
supportive. We did all of the radio interviews. That was a lot of
fun. We got to meet a lot of cool people. I kind of hope we go back.
I'm thinking we're going to be there. I'm hoping for it. Our schedule
is lining up and starting to fill in for the summer time. I'm hoping
they will invite us back."
