DETROIT
-- MINI Coopers have become so popular of late that they are
now featured in cinematic car chase scenes, where previously
only classic Mustangs have been found. Making its debut at
the NAIAS 2007 is the Convertible Sidewalk, even more impressive
than the MINI’s elite model, the S.
This new MINI
comes in a choice of 2 engines here in the U.S. For purposes
of simplicity we will stick with the “Standard”
here, which features 115hp and a 4-cylinder power unit with
an output of 66kW/90hp. It reaches a top speed of 120 mph
within 9.8 seconds with a fuel consumption of 38.7 mpg. Although
it comes with a standard 5-speed transmission, a 6-speed or
automatic is also available.
The Sidewalk is
equipped with belted restraint systems and driver/passenger
airbags as well as 2 head/thorax side airbags integrated into
the seats. In the event of a rollover, tubular steel A-pillars,
double high-strength aluminum pipes beneath rear seats, and
integrated headrests gives a maximum of passenger safety.

MINI Representative
Angela claims that she is also a Sidewalk fan and points out
its multitude of features, such as runflat tires which can
maintain a speed of 50 mph even after a blowout. A standard
tire defect indicator warns the driver of any pressure loss.
Also standard is an onboard computer, PDC (Park Distance Control),
a Mini Boost radio including a CD player and AUX connection.

Just as impressive
is Sidewalk’s array of other standard features: power
windows and rear views, air conditioning, heated glass rear
window, adjustable steering column, remote locking and a pump-up
seat to fit even the smallest of drivers.
The steering wheel
boasts cruise-control and audio system buttons. The Sidewalk
comes in a choice of 5 colors, Pepper-White, metallic Silver,
Racing Green, Astro Black, and White Silver. Malt-Brown leather
adorns the upholstery, seating, steering wheel and gear knob.
A space-saving soft cover folds back in 15 seconds even when
driving up to speeds of 75 mph.
The Sidewalk carries
a MSRP starting at $21,850, quite economical when compared
to other convertibles in its class. Its unique look will make
it a favorite for both male and female sports-minded enthusiasts.
