DETROIT
-- Paula
Tutman is best known as a general assignment reporter on WDIV-TV
Local 4 News in Detroit. She has recently added a new line to her
resume -- published author. Her first book in the "Deadline!"
series was published in May 2008. The second book which is being
called "Deadline: Second Block" will hit store shelves
on March 25. Tutman is not stopping there. She said another book
is already in the pipeline.
Tutman
admits that she never wanted to be a television reporter. Her first
love is writing. She has been promoting the new book at airports,
libraries, various bookstores, conferences and book conventions.
Tutman held a book signing and discussion yesterday at the Skillman
Branch of the Detroit Public Library.
"I
think just because of the kinds of things I report on, the kinds
of stories that I do," Tutman said about the inspiration to
write these books. "There's just so many interesting stories
out there that can be told. It's just fun to sit down, write them,
and be able to change them the way you want to want to change them.
I just love write. I love the art of writing. I love the craft of
writing. I've had a really good time doing this."
The first
book of the "Deadline!" series won the Hollywood Book
Festival's 2009 Best General Fiction Award.
"The
story of the first book is a reporter shows up on the scene of a
double murder," Tutman said. "Doesn't realize the killer
is stil there. When he sees her, he goes 'that's my favorite reporter.
I love her.' He makes a decision right there that if he keeps killing,
she's going to keep showing up to cover those murders and he'll
get a chance to meet her. The second book picks up with the killer
plotting a way to get back to Detroit to actually meet P.S. Garrett.
I'll tell you this, he does get a chance to meet her and that meeting
will kill one of them."
This is
not a book for kids. It includes rough and explicit language and
some sexual situations. Adults only!
"The
second book is a sequel to the first book," the author said.
"You don't have to read the first book in order to catch up
with the second book. It's just going to make you want to go back
to read the first book. It is a true sequel. It picks the story
up. You actually get a chance to meet this killer. You get into
his head. I promise you by the end of the book, you may feel differently
about why he did what he did. It's going to change the way you feel
about the news. One of my author buddies said this was fiction was
a conscience. It really does ask questions of ourselves and others
that you answer by the end of the book."
She has
many upcoming book signings and events scheduled in the metro Detroit
area. On April 10, Tutman will appear at the Barnes and Noble store
at 500 Main Street in Royal Oak. On April 16 at 7 p.m, she will
be at the Barnes and Noble store at 3120 Fairlane Drive in Allen
Park. On May 8 at 12:30 p.m., Tutman will be at the Barnes and Noble
store at 17111 Haggerty Road in Northville. Then, on June 29 at
7 p.m., look for her at the Waterford Library at 5168 Civic Center
Drive in Waterford.
"The
next book to come out has nothing to do with this," Tutman
said. "P.S. Garrett is going to be a recurring character. She
is a reporter who always finds herself in the middle of something.
There's always going to be a twist and a turn. She's always in the
middle of it. So the next book to come out is not going to be a
P.S. Garrett book. The book I'm working on right now is a P.S. Garrett
book. I can't talk a lot about it because it hasn't been copyrighted
yet. Needless to say, there's a lot going on in the news right now
and a lot of that will be in the book."
