BROOKLYN,
Mich. -- If anyone ever thought that Dale Earnhardt
Jr. wasn’t NASCAR’s most popular driver, you
better think again.
Earnhardt
Jr. was the featured guest at a rally for over 700 auto
workers and National Guardsmen at the Motor City Casino’s
Sound Board Theater in Detroit on Thursday. Earnhardt
Jr. attended the event in support of the auto industry
and National Guard and also to help promote the much anticipated
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LifeLock 400, which will be held
at MIS on June 14.
Earnhardt
Jr. is the defending LifeLock 400 race winner, his only
Sprint Cup victory at Hendrick Motorsports thus far.
“This
was a great event for a number of reasons,” Earnhardt
Jr. said. “To be able to come to Detroit to support
the auto industry, the National Guard and Michigan International
Speedway is something I enjoyed doing. I won the June
race at Michigan last year so we are all looking forward
to coming back in a couple of weeks and trying to defend
our race win.”
Earnhardt
Jr. received great fanfare from the fans in attendance
at the rally. Also attending the event in support of MIS
was new Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz and players
Jared DeVries, Casey FitzSimmons and this year’s
No. 1 draft pick Matthew Stafford. The group presented
Earnhardt Jr. with a Lions helmet before the rally began.
“I
collect helmets so this will be a great addition to my
collection,” Earnhardt Jr. said.
Earnhardt
Jr. also met with members of the national and local media
before the event. The hot question was his reaction to
the replacement of his crew chief Tony Eury Jr. before
this weekend’s race at Dover. Lance McGrew will
be Earnhardt Jr’s crew chief during the LifeLock
400 at MIS.
“It’s
a tough decision to make, but we’re not running
real well this season,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “Hopefully
this will be a positive change and we can get back on
track before the LifeLock 400 in a couple of weeks. I
rank MIS as one of my favorite tracks to race at so it
should be fun.”
Nestled
in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan
International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable
NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy
the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the
love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race
fans and drivers alike.
