DETROIT -- Funk rock trendsetters N.E.R.D. will headline the AT&T Block Party on Friday, April 3, the first of three days of free music concerts at The Big Dance, as part of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Final Four weekend in Detroit. Blending hip hop, R&B, soul, and alternative rock to produce two top 10 albums in the U.S., N.E.R.D. is the brainchild of legendary producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. As the record production duo The Neptunes, Williams and Hugo have redefined pop and hip hop music over the last decade, winning two Grammys for their work with Justin Timberlake and collaborating with acts like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, and Nelly. Today’s announcement makes complete the headline entertainment lineup for the three days of The Big Dance, which starts on Friday, April 3 and runs through Sunday, April 5 at the Detroit Riverfront (just east of the Renaissance Center). The AT&T Block Party starts at 11 a.m. and wraps up at 10:30 p.m. on April 3. In addition, pop star and singer/songwriter Jesse McCartney will perform on the AT&T Block Party stage. An accomplished songwriter, McCartney also has recorded three Billboard 200 top 15 albums since exploding on the pop scene with his platinum debut album Beautiful Soul in 2004. Detroit fans will remember him best from his performance of his top 10 hit “Leavin’” at halftime of the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving game on November 27, 2008. “The addition of AT&T’s performers rounds out an outstanding weekend of music and entertainment for all ages at The Big Dance,” said Greg Shaheen, NCAA senior vice president for basketball and business strategies. “The Big Dance features some of the biggest names in music. We’re excited to have an event that offers music fans across all genres a wonderful opportunity to see established stars in concert free of charge.” In addition to national music, The Big Dance will feature some of Detroit’s best local bands performing on two stages throughout the three days.
